Boron Neutron Capture Therapy

BNCT: Targeted "Neutron Surgery" for Hard-to-Treat Tumors

BNCT selectively destroys tumor cells while sparing surrounding healthy tissue — a new option for patients with recurrent head and neck cancers and other tumors who have exhausted conventional options. Our partner center in Hainan is the world's second and China's first BNCT center in clinical operation.

What Is BNCT?

Boron Neutron Capture Therapy combines a boron-containing drug with low-energy neutron irradiation. The boron compound accumulates preferentially in tumor cells; when neutrons hit the boron atoms, a nuclear reaction releases particles with a range of about one cell's diameter — destroying tumor cells from within while largely sparing healthy tissue.

This means BNCT can often be delivered in just 1–2 irradiation sessions, compared with the 20–30 fractions of conventional radiotherapy, making it especially valuable for patients with recurrent, invasive or radioresistant tumors.

Commonly discussed indications include:

  • Recurrent head and neck cancers (the most established indication worldwide)
  • Selected brain tumors (e.g., recurrent high-grade gliomas, in approved programs)
  • Other solid tumors under clinical evaluation

Hainan Panboron Boron Neutron Capture Therapy Hospital

Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, Hainan, China

According to the center, it is the world's second and China's first BNCT center used for clinical treatment. Located in Hainan's Boao Lecheng pilot zone — China's special zone for pioneering medical technologies — the hospital integrates an accelerators-based BNCT system with dedicated oncology support services.

  • Accelerator-based BNCT system (no nuclear reactor required)
  • Multidisciplinary oncology team for patient selection and aftercare
  • Located in a medical zone designed for international patients

Why It Matters for International Patients

BNCT remains one of the rarest advanced radiotherapies globally — few centers anywhere offer it in routine clinical operation. For eligible patients, the Hainan center offers access without the long waits and premium pricing associated with the few BNCT facilities in Japan and Europe.

Our coordinators work directly with the hospital's international patient office to arrange medical record review, eligibility assessment, cost estimates, visa support and interpretation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a candidate for BNCT?

Candidacy depends on tumor type, location, stage and prior treatment history. Recurrent head and neck cancers are the most established indication. Submit your medical reports through our free case review and the hospital team will assess eligibility.

How much does BNCT cost in China?

Costs are typically far below those of comparable programs in Japan or Europe, but exact pricing depends on your treatment plan. After our medical review you will receive a written estimate before deciding anything.

What documents should I prepare?

Pathology reports, recent imaging (CT/MRI/PET-CT), treatment history, and current condition summary — in English if possible. We can help translate documents into Chinese for the hospital.

How long will I need to stay in China?

Because BNCT usually requires only 1–2 irradiation sessions, many patients can complete treatment and initial recovery within a few weeks, subject to the hospital's assessment of your case.
